Return of the Moffs

I've been waiting for this one for some time now. About a year ago I read on Tom Kazas' (Moffs bass player) website that a two CD reissue of nearly ever Moffs song would be on the way. It has taken some time but the reissue has finally materialized. The 2CD set, called The Collection is available through the Aussie label Feel Presents, who have been putting out some nice reissues of 70's and 80's Australian rock in recent years, including two Tales from the Underground compilations.

The Moffs were a psychedelic/mod/garage rock outfit that was on Citadel records in the 80's. Citadel was the home to many of the Radio Birdman related projects, Died Pretty, and several other quality bands. The Moffs were somewhat overlooked even back then as they had more of a pscyh bent than garage rock like most of the other bands on the label's roster.

This reissue brings together all the officially released songs of the band, some of which have never been on CD before. This inlcludes the tracks from the LP Labryinth, their self titled EP, and 7" singles. In addition, there are six tracks from their origianl demo tape, some covers, and several later era demos.

Dig Out Your Songbook

In the U.K. a new Oasis record is still a major deal. Case in point, last week's NME contained a bonus 25 page songbook and CD-ROM called Dig Out Your Soul Songbook. The promotional piece contains; chords and lyrics to four new tracks, video interviews with band members, screensavers, a play along video (to an older song 'Supersonic'), and chances to win a limited edition box set and a VIP Oasis experience (where the winner will be flown to see them anywhere on their world tour).

Streaming of Dylan

The latest release in the Bob Dylan bootleg series, Tell Tale Signs, is a two CD set of unreleased tracks and alternate takes from 1989-2006 that is scheduled to be released on October 7th. At 12am on September 30th though the entire release will be streamed as a preview on NPR.

Why Ain't School More Fun?

"Why ain't school more fun?" asks Westerberg on his latest MP3 only download called Bored of Edukation. This new song was released on September 13th through Amazon.com and is now also available through Tunecore. At this rate, I'm sure there will be a new Westerberg MP3 released before I finish writing this. The current download is more of a traditional song that clocks in under five minutes as opposed to some of the mash-up work of late that is around twenty minutes in length. In the opening verse, the phrasing is very Dylan-esque and the acoustic guitar is in the forefront, but by the time he gets to the chorus the crunch of an electric guitar appears and the song becomes more of a typical Westerberg composition.

Rew the Day

My only regret is that I didn't hear about this free digital download EP sooner. Last year Kimberley Rew, former guitarist for the Soft Boys as well as Katrina & the Waves, released Ridgeway for download on his website. The digital EP is a concept piece about a journey from the North Sea to Avebury that is sequenced as one twenty minute track.

Complimentary Meds

I'm sure these MP3s have been available for a while, but I just stumbled across them the other day. I had been listening to the KCRW session that Spiritualized did back in May and decided to check out the Spiritualized web site. I ended up finding some great free downloads available there in the Complimentary Medicine section. First is a live show from 2007 in London. And then there are two "bootlegs", 24 tracks in all, of demos, studio outtakes, Peel sessions, rehearsals, and unreleased mixes from 1990 and 1991.
